The Bible is a Book you can trust, because Jesus is the One you can trust.

Evidences for Belief in God

There are solid and credible evidences for believing in God and in accepting the Bible as God speaking to us.  The Bible is not opposed to true science.  The Bible harmonizes with what we know scientifically.  In this article arguments are set forth with the appeal to consider them honestly and sincerely.

The Life Argument:

Something is, therefore, something always was.  Something cannot come from nothing.  Atheists admit that life has not always existed on the earth, life had a beginning on earth.  Atheists also must admit that all scientific experimentation has shown that life only comes from life.  Life is here.  Life does not come from non-life, therefore life had to be eternal.  Atheists deny this, but the Bible affirms this in affirming the existence of an eternal, living God.  The Bible has an adequate cause for life’s existence on earth, but the Atheists’ “explanation” does not adequately explain the origin of life.  His explanation contradicts the scientific principle that life only comes from life.  In order to prove evolution, “spontaneous generation” of life must be proven.  And that has never been proven.  Oh yes, many “believe” it, but they have no scientific proof.

The Moral Argument:

Even Atheists believe there are some things right and some things wrong, but from where did the idea of right and wrong come?  The Bible gives the answer in the existence of a supreme Lawgiver, God!  Atheists have no basis for morality.  They have no absolute standard by which to prove it is more wrong to kill a human being than to kill a rat or snake.  Atheism says that matter and the motions of matter are all there is.  So, he is driven to the consequence that human intelligence is simply the result of the accidental motions of matter.  What we think, what we are, and what we do is just matter moving and we cannot help being what we are.  If atheism is right about matter over mind, then there are no laws, just accidents.  And, there could be no standard of right and wrong, no moral laws.  The apostle Paul wrote, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God” (Romans 13:1).  This context of Romans 12 and 13 shows clearly that we do not have the right to do our own thing, but that we are to submit to civil authorities as they are subject to the supreme lawgiver, God.

The Design Argument:

The order we see in the universe necessarily implies an intelligent, living, omniscient Designer, God!  This is as true as the automobile necessitates a manufacturer, a watch demands a watchmaker, and a building necessarily implies a builder.  Atheists not only deny God’s existence, but affirm that all the design in the universe happened by blind chance—accidents.  This is contrary to all we know or can know.  Atheists might as well believe that the automobile came to be by an explosion in a junk yard, and that their houses were accidentally produces by a tornado.  And consistency demands that they admit that their arguments against God are not by intelligent design, but by accidents.

The Entropy Argument:

The universe is “running down,” not “running up.”  The Atheists’ whole argument is based on the concept that things “run up” not “run down.”  The view is that things accidentally improve (ascend), not degenerate or descend.  But the evolutionary theory is contradictory to the scientific law of entropy.  The theory violates the principle that things left to chance go to disorder rather than order.  It violates the fact that animals and plants left to chance breeding degenerate rather than improve.  Dr. Richard Lewontin, a Harvard Geneticist and an evolutionist, stated, “they [Atheists] do not argue that we should accept their view because of the evidence, but because they cannot accept God.  Their attitude is that a person cannot be a true scientist and believe in God and creation.  They can’t prove their theory, but expect us to accept it, not because they have the evidence to prove it, but because of their claim to be the only real scientists.  What arrogance!  Most of what I hear from them is they think they are qualified on this subject because they don’t believe in God, and they think a believer in God is unqualified and ignorant because he believes in God and creation.  Where is the proof of “Spontaneous Generation” of life from dead matter?”  – By Leon Goff

The Bible, Man’s Origin, Purpose & Destiny

We, as Christians, need to know the ground upon which we stand.  We need to be conscious of our happy position so that we have no need to be ashamed of believing in God and the Bible.  Don’t be swayed by those who make fun of us and misrepresent what we believe.  In many instances they charge us with the very thing of which they are guilty.

In Arts & Life section of the October 6, 2013 Dallas Morning News is an article about Dr. Richard Dawkins, who is described as “among the world’s pre-eminent evolutionary biologist,” and “Public Atheist, No. 1.”  The article quotes the following from a new book he has written: “the obsession with ‘sin’ and the Pauline belief that everybody is born in sin, inherited from Adam (whose embarrassing non-existence was unknown to St. Paul), is one of the very nastiest aspects of Christianity.”  So, you see that Dawkins opposes Christianity, in this case, not because of what Paul taught, but because of what a false religious system misrepresented Paul as teaching.  Paul never taught that we are born in sin.  In Romans 5:12 Paul wrote: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death (spiritual death) spread to all men, because all sinned” (Emp. mine).  Paul is saying that each person suffers condemnation (spiritual death) because of the guilt of his own sins.  Yes, Adam was the first, he introduced sin into the world, but each of us becomes sinners when we sin.  This agrees with the prophet Ezekiel when he wrote: “The soul who sins shall die.  The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son” (18:20).  I oppose the doctrine as much as Dr. Dawkins does.  But I believe what Paul taught.  Dawkins should also!

The Origin of Man:

The Bible is the only book that tells us where we came from.  “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth….Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image….So God created man in His own image…” (Gen. 1:1, 26-28).  “God, who made the world and everything in it….And He has made from one blood every nation of men…” (Acts 17:24, 28).

We are made in God’s image in that we are intelligent, reasoning creatures of choice.  The verses above teach that God, an intelligent being, created the life that we as humans possess.  Life is here, but life has never been proven to come from non-life (dead matter).  The Bible gives the answer to the origin of the life.  It came from the eternal, living, omnipotent, omniscient God!

Atheism starts with matter (without explaining where it came from; the Atheist is obligated to make his own dirt), but his first cause is not sufficient to explain the existence of life, man, morals and consciousness.

The Purpose of Man on Earth:

Our mission here on earth is to serve and please God, our Creator.  The apostle Paul on Mars Hill in the first century, said: “so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being…” (Acts 17:27-28).  Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 12:13: “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”  “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.” (Revelation 4:11).

The Bible not only states the purpose for man’s existence, but it gives us the moral standard by which to live.  The Bible tells us what good and evil are and how sin was introduced into the world (Gen. 3:1-6; Rom. 5:12; Gal. 5:19-23).

Atheism has no mission or purpose for man, has no moral standard to guide us, cannot tell what is right and wrong, and has no explanation for the origin of evil.  Atheism has no lawgiver, therefore, no laws.  If there is no law there can be no sin or evil.  Is the Atheist willing to accept the consequences of his position?  I don’t believe he is, especially if the evil is done against him.  I am confident that he likes to be treated as God has commanded, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  But his doctrine is “the survival of the fittest,” whatever you are big enough to do, do it, do your own thing.

The Destiny of Man:

The Bible is the only source book that tells us what is going to happen to us after this life on earth.  It tells us we will spend an eternity either in heaven or in hell (Matt. 25:46).  The Bible teaches us how to prepare for heaven and avoid hell.  Some people want to believe in heaven but deny hell.  But the Atheist has no more reason to believe in heaven as he does to believe in hell.

Atheism is a doctrine of doom, a doctrine of no hope.  Why would an Atheist work for anything for the future?  In the article referenced above, Dr. Dawkins is quoted: “There’s a tendency for people to think it would be intolerable if there were no afterlife, that there’s no meaning to the universe….The obvious response to that is, if that’s intolerable, well that’s tough.  Just because it would be nice if there were meaning to the universe, that doesn’t mean there is.”  It is difficult to understand how anyone can come to the conclusion that there is no purpose for the universe or for mankind!

Christians have a reason to be better fathers, mothers, children, rulers, business men, neighbors, friends, etc.  We are responsible to a supreme authority and we have hope of a great reward.  The doctrine of Atheism has no real reason to live a better life, and no promise of any reward beyond this life.

What if the Atheist is right, what will we as Christians have lost and to regret?  Nothing!  We will have the same end.  But if the Atheist is wrong and God does exist and the Bible is His word to mankind, what will the Atheist have lost?  Everything!  He will spend eternity in hell!  The Christians’ life is the best choice!

The Authority of Scripture

The importance of something is seen by how much emphasis it’s given.  God has emphasized the importance of His Word more than anything else He could have emphasized.  Consider Psalm 119; Colossians 3:16-17.

A.    The authority (name) of the Lord Jesus (Acts 2:38; 8:16; 10:48).
B.    The authority of His ambassadors (Acts 4:7, 10, 18-20).
1.    Both carry equal weight (Matt 17:5; Acts 3:22; John 16:13).

A.    All Scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17).
B.    Books of Moses (Exo 4:12).
C.    Psalms (2 Sam 23:2).
D.    Prophets (2 Pet 1:21).

A.    Jesus explained (Luke 24:27).
B.    Jesus quoted (Luke 17:26-32; Matt 12:39-40).

A.    Divergent views:
1.    Incomplete, irrelevant, slightly profitable.
B.    Accurate view:
1.    Complete and final (2 Pet 1:3; 1 Cor 2:11-13; Jude 3).
2.    One and only (Eph 4:5).

Jesus made promises relating to His word in the Bible: Teach them, and I will be with you (cf. Matt 28:20).  Abide in them, and I will answer you (cf. John 15:7). Keep them, for they will judge you (cf. John 12:48).

God’s Amazing Bible

How much do we take for granted?  We take for granted freedom in this country, and the blood spilled to make that possible.  We also take for granted the accessible nature of the Bible and our freedom to read it, believe it and practice it.  Go to other countries and you will realize just how much we take for granted.  But, our freedom gives us opportunity to learn the most amazing evidences for God, the Bible, and Jesus Christ being the Son of the Living God.  There are many amazing things about the Bible, but one feature sets it high above all other religious books.  We have the prophetic word, and we have that prophetic word made more sure and certain.

Consider the element of prophecy in the Bible, unmatched by any other religious book.  Consider the Old Testament as the part that Jewish writers wrote hundreds of years before Jesus Christ was born.  Then consider how many prophecies they wrote that described Him in amazing detail.  Consider the odds of one man fulfilling just eight of those prophecies, to say nothing of the dozens and dozens of Old Testament prophecies, types, and shadows of this Messiah and His kingdom fulfilled in Jesus Christ.  Consider the following article: The Mathematical Odds of Jesus Fulfilling Prophecy.

“The following probabilities are taken from Peter Stoner in Science Speaks (Moody Press, 1963) to show that coincidence is ruled out by the science of probability.  Stoner says that by using the modern science of probability in reference to eight prophecies, ‘we find that the chance that any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000.’

To help us comprehend this staggering probability, Stoner illustrates it by supposing that we cover the state of Texas with silver dollars two feet deep.  ‘Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state.  Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one.  What chance would he have of getting the right one?  Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man” (Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell).  Now consider the fact that there are not just eight Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Jesus Christ, but roughly 353.  It should be quite evident that Jesus did not fulfill the prophecies by accident.”

The Bible is an amazing Book.   It not only prophesied great details about a Messiah who was coming, but it also gave amazing types and shadows of him hundreds of years before the Messiah arrived in Jesus of Nazareth and fulfilled every detail.  The writers of the New Testament were amazed by this factor, as one of the reasons they were convicted enough to live and die for the spread of this message.  They saw what we all need to see.

The New Testament shows how Jesus fulfilled those prophecies, types, and shadows in every way.  Those writers suffered and died to let us see what they saw, and understand what they understood (Eph.3:3-5).   It would be a shame if we let it sit on the table and collect dust as the rich man and his brothers had done for so long (Luke 16:19ff).  Let the rich man’s anguish over that neglect, and his regret and fear that his brothers would repeat the same mistake, be an alarm to make us afraid to take God’s word for granted any more.

We have the prophetic word made more sure (2 Pet.1:16-21).  When you study and start grasping these marvelous things, light comes on in the mind, heart, and life,  growing brighter and brighter until it is like the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.  You realize that you hold in your hands the most important information in the world.  Nothing in the security vaults of our nations’ top-secret chambers holds any information more important than the treasures of wisdom and knowledge available to us in the Bible.  When it dawns on you, Glory fills the soul.  We are enlightened and illuminated (Heb.6:4).  Why does that happen?  Because it becomes very clear that the will of man and human wisdom did not produce the prophetic word.  Truly, holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

This book of prophesy contains the power of God to save the soul from death, enlighten the mind, and guide the soul to eternal life.  Oh, what a subject that is itself!

“Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls” (Jas 1:12).

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Rom 1:16).

If you have lost sight of how marvelous and amazing the Bible is, spend some time within its pages, and let that Star rise again in your heart.  The Psalmist said: “Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things from your law”(Psalm 119:18).

Have you seen that glorious light?  Don’t let your chances get by you.  Neglect other things, but don’t neglect this.  It is too amazing to neglect for needless and useless things that make useless lives.

Study this book, your life here and after death depends on it. — Terry W. Benton
